For some, the idea of flipping the lights to start a new day and wearing the visible or invisible badge “Owner” means everything. It is well worth the lost hours of sleep managing inventory, countless calls to prospects and marginal salary to ensure the “Open” sign stays illuminated.
Still, even the most dedicated business owners realize it can be a daunting venture if you go it alone. Greater Richmond GATE (Growing America Through Entrepreneurship) understands the value of support. The program, which is funded by the Virginia Employment Through Entrepreneurship Consortium (VETEC) and created to bridge the gap from dream-on-paper to success-in-motion for eligible Workforce Investment Act adults, dislocated workers and veterans, is designed to serve as a springboard to Main Street.
While it requires an immeasurable commitment from participants, Greater Richmond GATE backs each individual with a one-on-one business assessment, counseling and classes that teach core business fundamentals, marketing, business management, business taxes and personnel issues. Experienced owners from the business community volunteer to mentor graduates and provide encouragement for the road ahead.
More than 5,500 training hours and 100 information sessions have launched over 50 businesses and 250 program participants. Greater Richmond GATE program coordinator, Martin Short spoke with William Eastman during a four-part podcast on Richmond Biz Live and shared the continued success, process and advice. Listen to these conversations below and visit GRGate.org to register for an information session to “Start your own small business.”
